50 Years of Inspiring Generations: The Wally Hayward Legacy

For 50 years, the MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon has celebrated endurance, determination and the remarkable legacy behind its name.

Wally Hayward’s running journey stretched across nearly six decades, from a first victory at 21 to a final finish at 80. Along the way, the achievements highlighted in our anniversary artwork include five Comrades victories, Olympic participation and becoming the first athlete to complete the Comrades Marathon in under six hours.

Today, that legacy continues through every runner who takes on the Wally.

As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we honour the history, the runners and all the unforgettable moments that have made the event what it is today.

50 Years. Thousands of Stories. One Legend. 🏃🏅
